Honestly, if that sounds like your preference, I'd take a closer look at the EOS M50 instead. That said, I suspect the vast majority of folks will use the rear screen most of the time, as it lets you preview your exposure and offers vastly more robust and flexible autofocus options. Plus, the metering and white balance were generally great, so I didn't often worry about needing to use live view to preview my exposure. In any case, when used this way, the camera is super-responsive and it locked focus quickly and accurately under almost any conditions. There is an 'Auto' mode, where the camera chooses which point to use and which subject to focus on, but I like the extra degree of control a single point gives me. Once the camera focused, I would keep the shutter half-pressed, and move the camera to compose my photograph - a technique called 'focus and recompose.' It's not an uncommon way of working, but more robust viewfinder autofocus systems don't require this, and it's a bit of a workaround these days. I used the optical viewfinder almost exclusively, and and half-pressed the shutter to focus using only the central point. Despite this, there's still plenty of room for a nice, secure grip that makes one-handed shooting a joy (or at least, as much of a joy as it can be with sweaty hands in 90% humidity).Īnd when we ventured out of the hotel for an eight-hour trek across town to Jazz Fest for the day and dinner in the evening, the S元's size and ergonomics succeeded in feeling enough like a 'real camera' to make me want to use it often, without making regret slinging it over my shoulder.įor these types of shots, the rear screen offers either tap-to-focus or face detection, which may be a better option for more novice users than the 'focus and recompose' technique in the viewfinder. It's small and light enough to avoid feeling a burden, even in the sweltering New Orleans heat. The S元 was a near-ideal photographic companion. The EF-S 24mm F2.8 pancake lets you get some subject separation, but I almost always had enough depth-of-field that focusing and recomposing worked just fine and dandy through the optical viewfinder.
